The Interplay of International Law, Media, Ethics, and Double Standards in the Ukraine Crisis

This essay will look at the criticism of double standards in the international community's response to the war in Ukraine, with reference to the interplay of international law, human rights, and ethics. It will not debate the presence of double standards but rather examine the motives behind them and their manifestations. To achieve this, it will consider two aspects of this issue. First, it will posit that nation-states, particularly those in the West, exhibit a double standard rooted in strategic objectives, where their responses to international conflicts are influenced more by geopolitical interests than by a consistent application of international law or human rights principles. This will involve looking at the United States of America’s response to the ongoing war, what objectives may be driving their actions, and the criticism they’ve received.
